Forget the naysayers - playing bingo or doing the crossword could keep you mentally sharp, research suggests.
Sir Charles Stanford, Lord of the Manor of Preston, asked his agent to open a sports and social club for the people of Preston, who were mainly his estate workers.
In August 1908, with a railway carriage as a pavilion, the bowls club was opened with Sir Charles as its first Chairman. The club had a quoits court and a 3 rink bowling green.
Helen and Michael provide a warm welcome at the Preston Club restaurant, the venue feels relaxed and homely with a touch of class. Play a game of bowls, then order a cup of coffee and watch the world go by from the large club house windows. Head Chef Michael works round the clock to bring you a delicious spread of sweet and savoury dishes, perfect to enjoy alone, or with friends after playing in a tough league match. Why not stay on for lunch? Indulge yourself with delicious food and good wine of course!
The brain is often described as being “like a muscle”. It’s a comparison that props up the brain training industry and keeps school children hunched over desks. We judge literacy and numeracy exercises as more beneficial for your brain than running, playing and learning on the move.
But the brain-as-muscle analogy doesn’t quite work. To build up your biceps you can’t avoid flexing them. When it comes to your brain, an oblique approach can be surprisingly effective. In particular, working your body’s muscles can actually benefit your grey matter.
